Mary Kathryn Arnold (Nanny) was the grandmother of an employee at Mary Crowley Cancer Research when she was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2009 at the age of 91. Upon coming to Mary Crowley, Nanny formed a special bond with her physician, Dr. Neil Senzer. To express her gratitude to Mary Crowley, she faithfully sent a monthly donation along with a handwritten letter. Over the years, employees at Mary Crowley enjoyed reading these monthly letters, which would include updates about her health, family, the weather, and even as she grew weak, her faith, stating, “God has been soo soo good to me.” Nanny was endeared to so many that on her 95th birthday, the Mary Crowley staff signed and sent a card wishing her the happiest of birthdays.
Nanny passed away on July 30, 2013, but she made a difference to patients through her monthly donations and inspired the staff with her letters of encouragement to “Keep up the good work.”
